Gender Norms in Men Fashion

For decades there have been rules of what men and women should be wearing, and which colors. Since the end of the 19th century, women have been inspired by men's wear and included it in their style. Because of this, presently it has become more common for women to wear pants, while it is still taboo for men to wear skirts or other clothing, that is considered as being feminine.

In 2019 at the red carpet for the 91st Academy Awards (Also called Oscars), the 51-year-old actor and singer Billy Porter showed up in a black simple tuxedo gown, that represented both the feminine and masculine in one outfit. By doing this he challenged the fashion norms and stereotypes, that are still existing in society.

Today we experience that fashion companies have started to produce unisex clothing for both genders. Some companies like Gucci have even started to bring in colors that have normally been seen as “girl colors” and patterns into their collections for men - which is a little step forward. But still, fashion has not made it to the point, where they try to create a drastic change by creating actual feminine clothing for men and start a change in the unspoken rules of what the dress code for men should be.
