Shapewear for pregnant women - inclusive or horrifying?

Updated: Nov 13, 2020

In 2019 Kim Kardashian West made a SKIMS’s maternity line. Opposite the KIMono name backlash Kardashian West did not retract her maternity line. Kardashian West “sparked controversy on social media as some users criticized message that pregnant women may need to slim down”(www.dailymail.co.uk). This was although not her intention with the line.

The maternity clothes are advertised as “'non-compressive cores,' so as not to apply pressure on the stomach”(www.dailymail.co.uk). She showed on Instagram stories how the clothes do not compress the stomach but everything around it (www.dailymail.co.uk). Further more she said “'If only there were cute bras like this that were holding you up and snatching you and making you feel better about yourself while you can breastfeed — that would have been everything to me,' Kim continued while perusing her items. 'I never wore a maternity bra because there was nothing out there, so this was really important to me.'” (www.dailymail.co.uk). This showcase how important this line is and how much this means to her.

She continues to be diverse by offering the maternity shape wear in nine different colours like her shape wear line (www.dailymail.co.uk). The line comes in a one-piece set (image 1) as well as with separate bras and full-length leggings or shorts (www.dailymail.co.uk). Kardashian West received positive comments on her Instagram (image 1), but despite her initially good idea to include pregnant women in fashion “many social media users questioned why pregnant women needed to be sculpting their physiques at all” (www.dailymail.co.uk).

This is clearly a collection that splits the waters. Kardashian West had a problem and developed a solution, but it is no new idea (image 2). No matter if you like the idea or think it is awful it is a diverse and including fashion approach that makes sure pregnant women are included in fashion and have something “nice” to wear while pregnant according to Kardashian West at least.
